Intra-Spherical Projections

PHOTOGRAPHIC PERFORMANCES

Many are the users, at once unmindful and unwary, of Google’s “Street View” function in both the desktop and online versions of its ever omnipresent mapping application. Few, however, would seem to question the ontological status of the Street View image—the so-called Photo Sphere—much less ponder its repercussions for the status of the spectator.

Intra-Spherical Projections, an ongoing series, attempts to do both by subjecting Google’s Street View mobile app to a battery of tactical misuses and disruptions. Each resulting image—displayed in its decidedly “non-spherical,” two-dimensional format—is the result of a single, irreproducible, photographic performance involving precisely choreographed movements through space and over time, which the artist coordinates with the successive production of image fragments.
