At first glance an homage (or an elegy) to structural filmmakers like Gary Beydler, Foundation (Treatise on the Perspective of Non-linear Time) stands more trenchantly as an audiovisual proclamation on our waning capacity to perceive, experience, and remember our situation in time and space. As with all moving-image art, time and space are also the raw materials of Foundation. In this case, however, sound and image serve to merge and reconfigure multiple times and spaces. To recede visually along a line through space is thus to dart forward and backward in time; to recede sonically along a line through time is thus to inhabit multiple spaces simultaneously.
